Lafayette Be the Change Spotlight :: Introducing Lafayette Habitat for Humanity

This month for our “Be the Change Spotlight,” we’d like to introduce you to Lafayette Habitat for Humanity, an organization whose mission is “Putting God’s love into action, we bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope.”

What is the History of Lafayette Habitat for Humanity ::

Lafayette Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing ministry that believes everyone deserves a decent place to live. Founded in 1992 as an initiative of the Lafayette Board of Realtors, Lafayette Habitat has built more than 130 homes in partnership with local families in need of decent housing. At present, Lafayette Habitat is one of only a handful of builders working on redevelopment in Lafayette’s urban core neighborhoods, and possibly the only builder offering affordable home ownership to buyers for whom a $180,000-$200,000 starter home is out of reach.

What Does Lafayette Habitat for Humanity Do ::

One out of every three households in Lafayette is paying too much for housing, making it hard to achieve financial stability. Lafayette Habitat is working to change that through affordable homeownership because when a family can achieve stable, affordable housing, they can then focus on securing other essentials for their family – like adequate healthcare, nutrition, transportation, and childcare.

Lafayette Habitat builds homes in partnership with low-to-moderate income families who have the financial and personal capacity to be homeowners, but who can’t qualify for conventional financing. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.

How Can You Support Lafayette Habitat for Humanity ::

One of the best ways to support Lafayette Habitat is to donate HERE. They’re able to leverage donated funds four times over, so your donation, no matter how small, really goes a long way.

Another great way to support Lafayette Habitat for Humanity is to visit their ReStore (located at 3123 Johnston St.). The ReStore is a home improvement and donation center that sells new and gently used furniture, appliances, and building materials at a fraction of retail prices. Every purchase, donated item, and/or hour volunteered at the ReStore supports Lafayette Habitat’s mission. It’s a great way to get a great deal and make a positive impact in your community.
