Taco Truck Date Night

In and around Lafayette and surrounding areas, you will definitely spot a taco truck or two. Food trucks themselves are becoming more and more popular. (Just an F.Y.I., not all trucks are specific to Mexican-type food.) There are a few which I have come across that are Honduran which are just as yummy in my opinion. They have a mixture of Mexican items with different flares from Honduras. The truck I visit most often is located at Congress and Rue De Belier.

At this location, which is Mexican, they have Sopes. Sopes are like small tortillas that are thicker and have a border around the edges. This last part is formed right after cooking the sopes when the texture is soft enough to allow you to pinch the edges to form the border. This border serves as a barrier to contain all the delicious toppings! I usually get the Sopes Bistec which is steak.

Another item is Elote, which is my four-year-old’s favorite. Elote is Mexican-style corn and served in a cup. We top it off with a Horchata, a traditional Mexican drink made up of white rice soaked in water. It’s flavored with cinnamon and sweetened with granulated sugar. Everything is minced up together in a blender and later strained to remove solids. Some versions are dairy free while others contain milk, and some versions contain nuts or added flavors like vanilla or coconut.

There are several other items to choose from, including my husband’s favorite street tacos with Barbacoa, an authentic Mexican dish typically made with beef, goat, or lamb. It is traditionally seasoned with dried chiles and spices and slow-cooked until perfectly tender. From there, it’s used as a delicious filling for tacos, burritos, and so forth.

So if you are in the mood for an authentic Mexican food item and/or Honduran, head to your nearest taco truck. Don’t be shy if you don’t speak the language — it’s absolutely fine because most of the trucks have pictures, and the items are usually numbered. Pro tip: bring cash just in case the truck you are visiting doesn’t have a credit card machine. That’s the only real reason I even carry cash these days, just in case the yummy taco truck is calling our name.

Some of the trucks have outside seating and some don’t. Yet a cool date night can definitely work in the car as you indulge in these delicious foods. Or even get it to go and go to the nearest park and have your date night there. Use your imagination and create a fun date night — the best part is you don’t have to get dressed up. Go as you are and just simply enjoy!!!
