A Black History Month to Remember

A Black History Month to Remember

In all my years of being a Black woman alive in America, I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited to celebrate Black History Month. There’s no time like the present to honor Black culture, celebrate our differences, and pay tribute to those who came before us and fought for equal rights for all. Celebrating Black History Month is an expression of love, respect, equality, and courage; simply put, it’s a vibe!

Black History Month offers everyone the opportunity to honor and celebrate those who have, and continue to, fight for equal rights.

A Black History Month to RememberIt’s a chance to say “thank you” and recognize the hard work and sacrifices of others. It’s a great time to engage in local events dedicated to celebrating Black history. You and your family can visit the library to check out some amazing books about historical Black figures. There are numerous powerful movies that vividly tell the stories of the civil rights movement and Black men and women who have made their mark on the world. And, of course, it’s always a perfect opportunity to support local Black-owned businesses. Simply put, Black History Month is a time to open your mind and learn about others who may or may not look like you.

It’s not lost on me that some people might not know how to approach celebrating Black History Month, and that’s okay. The desire to acknowledge and celebrate is the first step, so give yourself a pat on the back! Now, put action behind that desire. There’s no shame in being the first one to start a new tradition within your group or family. Go to the library and check out a book, visit a local Black-owned business — just get out there and do something.

Who knows? Your desire to learn might be the spark that encourages someone else to do the same.
