Peaches, Peaches, Peaches :: A Review Of The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The “Peaches” song gets stuck in your head right? So catchy! We have all been singing it around the house.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about then you definitely need to take the kids to see the new Super Mario Bros. Movie! It’s perfect for the whole family. We decided to take our girls to see it since they are out of school on spring break. My husband and I, as well as our 9, 6, and 4 year old daughters, all enjoyed it. You probably will too if you’ve played the games before.

The original Super Mario Bros. game graphics and music at the beginning of the movie transported this millennial parent back to my childhood. It was really fun seeing the games come to life. The whole movie was filled with nostalgia.

Mamma Mia!

The story starts with Mario and Luigi being shown as plumbers in Brooklyn, NY. They are fixing a leak when transported to another world by magical pipes. Bowser’s army of koopas is trying to take over the world. Bowser’s silly love song serenade “Peaches” is voiced by Jack Black, who had us all laughing. Throughout the movie, Mario has to eat mushrooms to power-up. He transforms into several different familiar forms.

Princess Peach, Mario, and Toad journey to the Jungle Kingdom to ask for their help to defeat Bowser. This was one of my favorite parts of the whole movie. The apes are all driving carts around town. Bananas, shells, and bombs are flying around the tracks. They even race over the iconic rainbow road.

Overall, the theme of family is very important in the movie. The brothers are portrayed as best friends. Mario and Luigi say during the movie “nothing can hurt us as long as we’re together.” I loved that message because I hope my girls are always best friends like Mario and Luigi.

The animation perfectly captures the colorful mushroom kingdom filled with adorable toads. The movie explained some of Princess Peach’s back story. We see flashbacks of baby Peach as well as baby Mario and baby Luigi too. My girls love to play as the baby characters on Mario Kart. There were so many fun Easter eggs from the games.

One very important egg was missing though.

Don’t skip those ending credits for a hint about who the next Mario movie might include!

Since seeing the movie, we have been playing all our favorite Mario games. Here’s a list of our favorites: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Super Mario Party, and an oldie Super Mario Galaxy. My girls would be so excited for a Mario Galaxy themed movie with Princess Rosalina. So many possibilities!

What was your favorite part of the movie? What do you hope to see in future Mario movies?
