The Flats :: Lafayette’s Latest Family Friendly Burger Spot Is Open

The Flats is located downtown on Jefferson street right next to Sunday’s Soda Fountain. The old location of Tula Tacos has been revamped into a cool burger joint that’s perfect for the whole family. Take the kids for a relaxed dinner out on the patio. We saw lots of other families dining with their young kids. The overall vibe is upscale burger restaurant but laid back.

We went on opening weekend and did not have to wait very long to order at the counter. We only had our youngest daughter with us, but my older girls would have went nuts for that old school gum-ball machine by the counter. After we placed our order, we then grabbed a picnic table in the patio area. The picnic table could have easily seated our family of six. We were surprised by how quickly our food came out even with a full restaurant. We didn’t bring our stroller, but I did see another family bring theirs. The patio has plenty of space to park a stroller. This is a good option for a baby who can’t sit in a high chair yet, but they do have high chairs available.

My husband, who is very picky about burgers, loved the burger. He ordered his with the triple patty. It was saucy and juicy and delicious. I had the spicy chicken sando. It has a nice crunch and a little bit of heat from the habanero honey mustard. We shared the loaded fries, which was plenty for two adults and a baby.

We liked the simple straightforward menu.

It made it easy to decide what we wanted to order. There are still enough options to go back and try something new next time. Having lived in Japan, I was excited to see the subtle Japanese twist on American favorites like Caesar salad with miso dressing and furikake. There’s also mushroom katsu if you need a meatless option. The menu also has several alcoholic drink options including cocktails, beer, wine, and a few kinds of margaritas. The bar also has seating if you want to just grab a drink with friends.

I can’t wait to go back and try the patty melt and fries with smoked onion dip. Okay…and the rougaroux style fries too.

Have you eaten at The Flats yet? What menu items are you excited to try? Let us know!
