I have lived in Louisiana for the past 17 years, and I have never really gotten into Mardi Gras. I know that this can be a touchy subject, especially for those people that were born and raised here in south Louisiana and live to be a part of Mardi Gras each and every year; it’s just what they do. And to tell you the truth, I have experienced some fun in the festivities, yet not to the point that I want to raise my child in the culture.
With that being said, I want to explain that I am not bashing anyone for their indulgence in their culture, their fun, and their right to do as they please. And furthermore, I am NOT saying it is a good or bad thing for them or their children. I am just simply saying it’s NOT for me and for my family. I am the type of woman and the type of person that I actually get excited for other people and what makes them happy, what elevates them to the next level. I just personally have tried and I just haven’t gotten into any of it.
Possibly not being from here originally and not marrying into the culture per se could be a reason, however, I just have never gotten excited about any of it. Do I love the people? Well yes, yes I do. Do I love the culture? Yes again. Is it for me? No, I do not believe it is. Is Louisiana in itself my home? Definitely, it is!!! I have made a wonderful life here for myself, this is where I met my husband, this is where I gave birth to my beautiful miracle daughter and this is where we have planted roots and are working and thriving and living a good life…This is home!!!! Home is where the heart is and my heart is here with my little family and all the people that I have come to know and love and that have become like family. But as far as Mardi Gras and all the festivities and such, I’ll just have a slice of “Dat King Cake Cher” and my joy will be from afar watching all of y’all do y’all thing.
