This December Play Day, How About a Chinese Winter Festival?

Culture. Creativity. Kids. What a great mix!

The Hilliard Art Museum’s upcoming Winter Play Day celebrating the Chinese Winter Festival will be a fun and exciting opportunity for kids to enjoy hands-on learning and experience Chinese food, traditions, and art.

Beginning Dec.18, 2021, the Hilliard Art Museum launches its virtual (and in-person) Winter Play Day celebrating the Chinese Winter Festival.

This season’s theme corresponds with the current exhibition by Chinese artist Master Shen-Crafts and fun at hilliard holiday event this DecemberLong titled Universe of the Mind: Master Shen-Long. The Winter Festival, or Dongzhi Festival, is a traditional celebration of winter’s arrival. Families celebrate by cooking special foods like dumplings and rice balls, making lanterns and ice skating.

The Play Day echoes the spirit of the Chinese Winter Festival, with cozy winter activities the entire family can enjoy. Online activities include a virtual tour of “Universe of the Mind: Master Shen Long,” a singing performance by local Chinese Immersion School students, and storytime with our local librarian.

Virtual hands-on activities include:

Make Rice Balls:  Rice balls are a traditional Winter Festival treat that symbolizes reunion and unity. Often shared as gifts to loved ones, rice balls are fun for making and gifting. The rice ball recipe can be downloaded at hilliardmuseum.org or stop by the Hilliard Play Day on Dec. 18th from 10a.m.-12 noon and enjoy free samples.

Build a Dragon: In honor of the Hilliard’s Universe of the Mind: Master Shen-Long exhibit, kids can download and print our Build a Dragon activity. All you need is paper, tape, colors and imagination.

Paper Lantern Making: Illuminate your house with festive winter decor. Simply download and print out our paper lantern blueprint and create your own designs. Make as many lanterns as you like and hang them up for holiday cheer.
