In honor of National Farmer’s Market week August 5 -11, lets talk about what you’re missing out on. If you’ve never been to a farmers market you should plan on one this weekend! The benefits of shopping at farmers markets are endless. Wide selections of freshly picked fruits and vegetables, great cash prices, the opportunity to support area farmers and boost your local economy are only a few reasons I like to go. You can check out www.localharvest.org to find a market near you.
Also, here are a few tips for your best farmers market experience along with a list of my favorite markets in the area.
Go early
Mainly before it’s too hot and all the good stuff is sold out! Arriving as soon as it opens for the largest and highest quality selection of products along with the coolest temperature of the day is my preference.
Bring cash
Most farmers market merchants do have access to some sort of credit card system; however, to make everything easier, cash is always king. Using cash and paying in small bills is an easy way to ensure an easy transaction.
Scope it out first
Just because different merchants are selling the same things doesn’t always mean that their prices and quality will be the same. Take a walk through all of the booths to see that variety, quality and prices of what’s available before making any purchases, then circle back for your purchases.
BYOBag
Bring your own BAG! Don’t forget your reusable bags or baskets to carry home your finds and help to keep the market sustainable.
