Sound Machines Are Life in Our House

There are a few things that I consider essential for my family and a good sound machine is on the top of that “must have” list. Sound machines are soothing. Sound machines are my good night’s sleep. Sound machines are my crutch.

Sound Machines Are LIFE in Our House

I cannot recall when my obsession and down right addiction to a sound machine at night started, but I do know that I am now hooked for life. This can most likely be blamed on my husband who has slept with a sound machine since he was a child. Maybe I was introduced to them in college and became hooked when we got married and moved in together; not really sure.

But there is not a good night’s sleep without a sound machine involved. If I forget a phone charger when traveling, I am in full panic mode. Not because I am afraid my phone will die and I won’t be able to use it … I know that I will not get 8 hours out of my sound machine app before my phone dies. What may have started as a simple, comforting sound at bed time has turned into a full on addiction. I have even created my own mix of sounds that I fall asleep to every night; the perfect mix of white noise, rain, and fan.

No Worries, my Kids Are Obsessed Too …

So like every good parent we have passed on our own obsessions to our children. In our defense, we lived in a really small house when the kids were still babies (like scared to flush the toilet small). From birth we blared a sound machine in the kids room in hopes that we would not disturb them as we were living our lives in our teeny tiny house. Now the big kids are five and six years old and they still have their own sound machine in their room and they turn it on themselves before they go to sleep at night.

My Friends Despise my Sound Machine

A couple of years ago I was on a bachelorette trip in Miami for one of my best friends. When we got back to the hotel I washed my face, brushed my teeth, put on my pajamas, got in bed, and turned on my sound machine. I remember thinking how grateful they were going to be the next day because I turned on my sound machine that night. Truth be told, my friends were not grateful for my sound machine that weekend. Come the next morning, they both were complaining about how loud and obnoxious my sound machine was.

How is this possible? Sound machines are life. Right? NO! Turns out not everyone loves sound machines equally. Nothing has changed for my family and I; we still fall asleep every night with our sound machines turned on loud enough for the neighbors.

Who else lives and dies for a sound machine at night???

She has a B.S.N. from Louisiana State University – School of Nursing and a M.S.N. from the University of South Alabama. Her “paying gig” is as a Nurse Practitioner with a focus in Quality/Infection Prevention at a local hospital. Her other full-time gig is as keeper of her home and mom to William 7, Mary Kathryn 6, and Benjamine 2. Most of her days at home are spent picking up toys and socks off the floor so the family Bernese Mountain Dog, Tipper, does not demolish them. When she has a spare moment, she enjoys reading crime novels, playing board game with her kids, cooking and baking foods that are not on her diet, and finding any reason to celebrate by drinking her beloved champagne. To burn off a few calories and any leftover energy, the family enjoys walking or riding bikes on the shaded boulevard on which they live. Lauren has fallen in love with the people and city of Lafayette and is very proud to raise her family here and to now call it home.
