Sprinkled with Pixie Dust :: Why We Finally Built Our Fairy Garden
As a girl mom, I have always loved fairies. My girls have had fairy books, costumes, and more. My oldest is 20, and my youngest is 5. I cannot believe I resisted the urge to build a fairy garden until now.
The Spark Behind the Magic
I love gardening. It’s therapeutic, and it builds character. The idea for a fairy garden came naturally. My front garden has become so full of flowers and plants that there is simply no room to add more. A fairy garden felt like the next logical step.
My kids and I had talked about building one before, but we never made the leap until now. Their gardening involvement had mostly been choosing statues and plants for the front garden, so this felt like an opportunity to give them something truly their own. I decided to just go for it. Building the fairy garden together means they get the freedom to shape it however they want. That makes this all worth it.
My biggest hesitation was space. I chose a wheelbarrow planter to house the garden, and while it’s the perfect blend of whimsy and beauty, it’s smaller than I originally envisioned. But we are making it work.
My other hesitation was pests. To get ahead of that, I mixed cinnamon (a natural deterrent for mice and bugs) with sand to form the base of the garden. So far, so good.
Want to start one of your own? Here is what you need to know.
Break Out the Pocketbook
Fairy gardens are usually small, but they can come with a surprisingly hefty price tag. Fairies, animals, houses, and accessories typically run about $10 piece. One purchase will not break the bank, but the total adds up quickly. Building a fairy garden can cost anywhere from $50 to $500 or more if you want yours stocked with every luxury your fairies could want.
Bring the Whimsy
Fairy gardens are all about tapping into your inner child. If you want your children to embrace magic and imagination, this is a wonderful place to start. There is no right or wrong way to build one. You can choose premade fairy homes, or do what I did: I pick houses the girls can paint and decorate themselves. This makes building your fairy garden an experience they won’t forget.
Our garden includes whimsical butterflies, magical mushrooms, fairy lights, and more.
I wanted my children to smile the moment they look at it. Mission accomplished. They love the tiny fairies and enjoy swapping out accessories to make our little village feel just right.
Build to Suit You and Your Child(ren)’s Personalities

When putting our garden together, I chose fairies that reflect each of my children. My quiet daughter who loves books got a fairy who looks imaginative and dreamy. My big-personality girl got one who talks to animals. My inquisitive child has a fairy sitting lost in thought. And the baby? She has the smallest fairy in the bunch, who looks ready for anything. My fairy was an easy pick: a beautiful woman stretched out in the summer sun. A girl can dream.

The accessories followed the same idea. An art station, because my girls love to create. A pond, inspired by one we love to visit. A playground, because endless fun is a priority. Everything in our garden feels intentional, because it is.
