“What did you get yourself for Christmas?”
My husband asked as I folded the tissue paper to reuse after all the presents had been opened (yes, I’m that girl).
I looked at him like he had 10 heads. It had never occurred to me to get myself a gift. I asked him, “well, what did YOU get yourself for Christmas?” He proceeded to list off various car parts, clothes, a new pair of shoes, etc. … 
I was stunned. A quick poll of a few friends and family members revealed mixed results on this topic. Many of my mom friends looked at me with puzzled gazes. “What do you mean, what did I get myself? I’ve been focused on grabbing the perfect gifts for everyone else!” But, then there were the people much more skilled in self care and gift giving. My sister is the most skilled at this. Why did this seem like such a weird thought to me? Didn’t I deserve a treat? Haven’t I been good(ish) all year? And who knows me better than me?
