Joining a Swim Club Made My Summer!

Family at the pool

Some of my fondest memories growing up were spent swimming with family and friends. My mom was a teacher, so we were lucky to spend our summers going on day trips and lounging by the pool during the summertime. I wanted to recreate those memories with my kids this summer. We found the perfect little watering hole in Lafayette and invested in making memories with the kiddos. What I wasn’t expecting was how much fun it would be for my husband and me! Here is my case for why you should join a swim club next summer too.

Fun Outside: It is hard to have fun outside in the summer months in South Louisiana! It gets so hot that it is unbearable. The pool gave us a way to get some exercise, Vitamin D, and take a break from screen time for the whole family.

A Third Space: I love to get together and socialize with friends. The pool was a really fun neutral ground to connect without anyone having to clean up their homes, make a meal, etc. Everyone brought their own snacks, and we simply enjoyed each other’s company. It was the perfect setting to connect with our kiddos and catch up.

Relax: I was truly able to relax! When I’m home, I look around and see the to-do list. Whether it’s going through that stack of papers or folding the laundry, there is always something that you “should” be doing. It was nice to give myself permission to be off the clock and enjoy quality time with my loved ones.

The Sunday Scaries: There is that moment on Sundays where the weekend no longer feels like leisure time. It’s time to prep and plan for the week. The mental load for the family and work can feel overwhelming. It was such a treat to find a space to draw me back into the present moment to connect with those I love.

Built in Fun Activity: By making the commitment to a pool membership, we always had a fun go-to activity to do on the weekends during the hottest time of year. No need to be bored, just go to the pool!

More Bang for Your Buck! By paying a flat fee for the summer, it was extremely reasonable. With inflation, a trip to Target or the movies costs a lot more than it did even a year ago. We could pack our own snacks and drinks at minimal cost.

Go for it next year! Get that pool membership you’ve been eyeing. It is worth every penny.

  1. Agree. Best investment my parents ever made for all five of us at Riverside country club in Harahan. We jumped the back fence and walked over. My Siblings worked there too. When it was my turn, Rhett and I joined and had our own membership and many good times were had.
