If you clicked on this post to read it, you are either a Pumpkin Spice lover or a hater … or my mama.

pumpkin spiceWell, if you are a lover, I am right there with you. I stalk the internet from the very beginning of August just waiting for Starbucks to announce the release date of the Pumpkin Spice Latte (affectionally referred to as a PSL on social media platforms) sometime at the end of August or beginning of September. On the morning of the release, I get up extra early, put my fall boots on, and make it to Starbucks to ensure that I have one of the first PSLs in hand, even if it is typically still over 90 degrees here in South Louisiana. I’ve bought the Pumpkin Spice Oreos and the marshmallows. My toddler even has a shirt with a PSL on it … for the second year in a row.

I am, for all intents and purposes, Pumpkin Spice’s biggest fan.

But, do you want to know one of my best kept secrets? I do not even really like Pumpkin Spice. Yep, you read that right. I am in love with everything Pumpkin Spice, but I think the flavor is kind of gross. But why? Why am I so committed to something that I do not even like? It is like that classic breakup tag line – I like the idea of Pumpkin Spice without actually liking the seasonal favorite.

I am so smitten with Pumpkin Spice and its Oreo offspring because their arrival means that the best time of year is truly upon us.

My first PSL of the season is a nod at “the best is yet to come.”

Everything pumpkin means there is gumbo on the stove and football to played and watched on TV. Hurricane season will come to a close, and the cooler temperatures will eventually show up. The best cluster of holidays is on the horizon creating the anticipation of Halloween costumes (and those pumpkin shaped Reese’s), Thanksgiving feasts, and Christmas cookies. We can look forward to tailgates (even if none of our teams are having winning seasons), holiday parties, and SO. MUCH. FOOD!

We do not have to live among the apple orchards and real life pumpkin patches to enjoy fall. We have our own reasons to celebrate the arrival of everything Pumpkin Spice, even if it means we have to turn the air conditioner down to 68 to get the full effect.

So, I still consider myself Pumpkin Spice’s biggest fan even though my secret is out.

I’ll be one of the first in line next year when Starbucks surprises us another week early with the arrival of the PSL because I know its arrival is just the very, very beginning of something really good.

Rebecca attended Loyola University of New Orleans and Southern University Law Center. Rebecca married her high school bestie in 2012. Quinton and Rebecca went through months of infertility before giving birth to Maxwell Lincoln in 2015. In 2016, they were surprised by a baby boy due in June 2017. But, in February 2017, they suffered with incompetent cervix and delivered sweet Theodore Paul too soon. In October 2018, after an incredibly difficult pregnancy, a cerclage, and a whole bunch of bedrest, Fitzgerald Joseph was born -- a happy, healthy, and perfect rainbow. If you can't find Rebecca, you can summon her with pot of freshly brewed coffee or look for her in Target or behind the kitchen island where she is hiding from her kids with a very generous pour of red.

  1. Yes, your mother did click on this to read about pumpkin spice!! I can vouch that all of Rebecca’s claims about this wonderful time of the year are true!! She and I have always loved this first hint of Fall and all of it’s glory!! I tend to get carried away with decorations, but I am learning about these coordinate food items! Of course, what really makes this mom smile is my pumpkin’s precious pumpkin!!!
