Free For All :: Juneteenth Events in Lafayette
Juneteenth is the holiday celebrated on June 19th in observance of the day slaves in Galveston, Texas were informed they were now free. Although it ended in June 1863 under “The Emancipation Proclamation“ set forth by Abraham Lincoln, slaves in Confederate states were not made aware of it for another two years. States that were still considered “Confederate” couldn’t enforce freedom until control was seized. Once Union Troops took over under General Gordon Granger they delivered “The General Order No. 3” freeing the slaves in the south.
There are many reasons to celebrate Juneteenth and the joy of freedom, heritage, and the achievements of African Americans.
No longer celebrated only in the Black community, this joyous day has gained recognition by others. It is now a time for people to come together in support of the African American community. Juneteenth was not recognized as a Federal Holiday until June 2021.
If you would like to find ways to celebrate, there are opportunities! Look for volunteer opportunities in the African American community, host or attend a cook out, display flags that represent African American Culture, shop with Black owned businesses, or participate in local events held in the community to commemorate this joyous celebration.
