Best King Cakes in Lafayette, Louisiana

The holiday dust has settled. Decorations have been packed away. The gifts have been opened and toys have been played with for a few days before they were forgotten.

Now, we move on to Mardi Gras! The time of revelry, parades, balls, and most important … KING CAKES! Typically, the rule of thumb is to wait until Twelfth Night to enjoy the delicious pastry. The reason for this is that this marks the twelfth and final night of Christmas and the coming of Epiphany. Not all follow the “rule” because let’s be honest, who wants to wait?!

Every city has its fair share of choices and heated discussions on which is best. In fact, people even get passionate about whether you should leave a knife in the king cake box. Here are a few choices for some of the best king cakes in Lafayette and the Acadiana area.

Keller’s Bakery

A Lafayette landmark and classic. This bakery has been open since 1895 and offers delicious flavors at both its Downtown and Youngsville locations. Their cake is made from their homemade danish pastry recipe dating back 120 years.

Meche’s Donut King

Meche’s Donut King offers full or half-and-half flavoring with their king cakes. Their king cakes are based on their donuts. Meche’s also offers shipping.

Poupart Bakery

Lafayette’s only authentic French bakery has been open since 1967. They offer traditional French and American king cakes (the ones you are used to seeing). If you haven’t tried the French version… DO IT. You won’t be disappointed. Shipping is also available.

Crystal Weddings

This bakery has risen in popularity over the years with its mouth-watering cakes. Their king cakes are no exception. In the past, they offered cakes at local stores around town, but you can order and pick up at their location.

Great Harvest Bread Co.

Known for some amazing and delicious breads, they also offer King Cakes! You can order online or stop by to place your order. You’ll definitely want to try their Blueberry Cream Cheese.

Sunny Akers Bread

A wonderful “micro-bakery” by a former French teacher turned baker! Her cake is said to be the perfect balance of sweetness with fresh bread that is sure to bring you back to New Orleans. You can order online or keep an eye out for her at the farmer’s market at Moncus Park on Saturday mornings.

Twins Burgers and Sweets

Another well-known bakery in the area with locations in Lafayette and Youngsville. You can order online or stop by and see what they may have in stock. You’ll want to check out their Pecan Praline Cream Cheese and Strawberry Cream Cheese for sure!

Village Deaux

Looking for some seriously out-of-the-box flavors? You’ll definitely want to check out their Apple Pie, Beignet, Banana Pudding, and Reese’s to name a few. Order online and pick up in-store available (Maurice, New Iberia, and Carencro).

They now resides in Youngsville and have two daughters Jolie (9) and Amelie (5) and her bonus son, Eli (14). On most weekdays you will find her running the roads to the dance studio, soccer field or her favorite place, 220 Fitness. The weekends are her favorite family time and are usually spent cooking with her family, watching her daughter show off her goalie skills, checking out any festival around the area, and catching all Saints and Cajuns game. She and her husband are craft beer drinkers, but she also won’t turn down a good Pinot Noir or fancy cocktail. She loves a good philanthropic event, to-do lists, singing in front of people whenever she gets the chance, her gym family and live music. Lafayette has been the perfect place to raise her children and immerse them in the culture she loves.
