Summer Blues

July! Heat, mosquitoes, bored kids, snow balls melting faster and summer fun dwindling down. It seems those 3 months of summer go by faster as the kids get older. Moms are consumed with guilt of working all day while kids insist on staying out after the street lights come on.

The fun summer hair colors are starting to fade, most families have vacationed, and the 4th of July passing indicate the mid summer blues are upon us.

Nothing says summer is coming to an end like back to school sales and community school drives. Soon sugar cane will permeate the air, the days will grow shorter, and buses will be on the road.

Back To School

August is a fresh start to a new academic school year here in Acadiana. Public, private and charter schools all welcome students with open arms. Home schoolers roll out of bed for a new school year with family. Preschoolers stating fresh, middle schoolers ready for a whole new world, and seniors finishing strong. The 2026/2027 school year is around the corner.

The thought of school shopping is enough to drive a mom mad. What’s cool? What’s approved? Which brand is the best? Which backpack last the longest? What shoes will withstand the school year? What uniforms won’t fade?

Uniformed

LPSS has uniform policies for Acadiana, requiring uniforms throughout the parish.

Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) uses the same uniform requirements for all grade levels! This is to help with safety and keep a focused learning environment.

LPSS uniform requirements include:

Tops :: Collared polo style shirts (colors vary by specific school). School issued spirit shirts are also allowed daily.

Bottoms :: Khaki or navy blue pants, slacks, or shorts, as well as blue or black jeans. No Spandex, cutoffs, torn or frayed clothing, sagging pants, or pants with holes.

K-5th :: Hoodies, coats, and sweatshirts are allowed, though hoods may not be worn inside the building.

Middle and High Schools :: All hooded garments are strictly prohibited on campus. Students may only wear hoodless jackets or sweaters! During extreme cold, the Superintendent may allow Cold Weather Attire.
