Sowing A Seed :: Gardening in Zone 9

Sowing A Seed :: Zone 9

As the sun goes down on summer, we prepare the kids for school while silently sowing seeds of success over our little ones. We look forward to the crisp -ber months that bring along cooler weather and family get-togethers. We can finally find peace in gardening at the end of the day. Late August to early September is a great time to start your fall harvest. Locally, we are in Zone 9, which determines what we can plant, when we can plant (including which plants survive cold winter months), and when to do transplanting.

Zone 9

  • The growing seasons are spring and fall.
  • Warm weather crops survive longer periods of time because our winters don’t get too cold.
  • Plants prone to dying from frostbite survive throughout the winter months.

Seeds To Sow

The LSU AG Center is a great resource which provides all information in regards to planting in Louisiana. Some of the best seeds to plant directly at the end of August into September include:

• Mustard, Collard and Turnip Greens

• Swiss Chard, Chinese Cabbage

• Lima Beans and Snap Beans

• Cucumbers and Summer Squash

• Snow Peas

• Radish, Beets and Carrots (Continuous Harvest)

How Does Your Garden Grow

When planting, keep in mind Lafayette in particular is Zone 9a. Here are some helpful gems to cultivate with care and flourish.

• Use Shade Cloth – Protection from insects and birds, should be draped over crops.

• Water Consistently – Root rot is caused by over and under watering, inconsistent watering can stress plants out! You must water appropriately.

• Use Mulch (approximately 2-3 inches) – Simply put, mulch improves the health of plants.

• Add Compost – Natural and cost effective means of having healthy soil.

• Pest Protection – Deterring pest so they don’t eat your harvest. Keep it clean and avoid  chemicals.

Overall, gardening is a great way to connect with nature which brings purpose, gives you a break, brings peace. The time is upon us if you are thinking of planting a garden of any kind whether it be an herb garden, flower garden, or a whimsical fairy garden. Let it relax you and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
