Little Allergies, Big Headaches, Immediate Solutions

Do allergens have your kids suffering from itchy and watery eyes, running nose, post-
nasal drip, cough, and sore throat? I bet their suffering has caused quite a commotion in your household! A sick kid can put life on hold, and that means missing quality vacation time – and skipping out on work for you. The worst part is the only thing you think you can do about it is give them over-the-counter allergy medicines that make them drowsy and less engaged –but not anymore! Acadian Allergy Center is offering immunotherapy, a
treatment option that helps to minimize allergy symptoms before they start.

What is Immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots or sublingual drops, is an allergy treatment
where patients are administered a small dose of allergens to build a controlled resistance to
them. By repeating this process over time, your body’s immune system will become
desensitized and more tolerant of these allergens. We can treat patients of all ages!

Immunotherapy can be beneficial in reducing the likelihood of developing new allergies, allergic asthma, and other severe conditions, such as anaphylaxis. In simpler terms, your immune system is like a bucket that starts filling up when it is exposed to allergens. Exposure to allergens in the environment happens all the time – by things we eat and places we go – but symptoms don’t appear until the bucket starts overflowing. That’s normally when you start to feel allergy symptoms like runny nose, post-nasal drip, cough,
and sore throat. Immunotherapy makes your bucket bigger, increasing your tolerance level to allergens without overflowing to reduce the severity and frequency of allergy symptoms.

Are there ways to control indoor allergens?Other Suggestions for Relief

Pollen production occurs twice a year, dust seems to never stop accumulating, and
unbearable humidity puts us at risk for lingering mold spores that activate allergy symptoms. It seems like wherever we turn, allergens are lurking to trigger runny noses, itchy eyes, and sore throats. What can we do to improve air quality in our homes? Are there ways to control indoor allergens?

There are several steps that you can take to minimize indoor allergens and improve your
indoor air quality. Our allergy specialists recommend:

 Keep windows and doors closed to prevent air intrusion
 Regularly replacing your air filter with a HEPA-compliant filter
 Apply an allergy cover to your mattresses
 Dust and vacuum regularly to remove dust buildup
 Regularly bathed and groomed to minimize pet dander
 Keep indoor plants to a minimum
 Install a dehumidifier and/or vent in bathrooms to remove moisture from the air
 Include pest control services to your routine household maintenance
 Add an indoor air purifying device that is CERTIFIED Asthma & Allergy Friendly®

If none of these previous options provide the relief you and your children are seeking, there is another potential solution that may meet your needs: Acadian Allergy Center.
