Celebrate Color and Culture :: Why You Can’t Miss the Holi Festival This Year!
One of the things I love most about living in Lafayette is the abundance of festivals. There’s always something going on somewhere! I’m excited to share that the 14th Annual Lafayette Holi Festival will be taking place on March 28, 2026. If you haven’t been to the Holi Festival yet, this is the year you, your family, and friends should plan to attend! With great food, fantastic music, the fun of playing with vibrant colors, and the joy of celebrating Holi, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
The Acadiana Indian Association has been dedicated to bringing this incredible festival to Lafayette since 2011. Holi is celebrated by Hindus in India and around the world. It marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Holi is a time for family, friends, and the community to come together to celebrate, dance, and feast. It’s truly a wonderful experience, everyone is incredibly kind and welcoming, making it even more special.
During the festival, you’ll see everyone splashing colors on each other as they pass by. The colors represent various meanings: blue symbolizes the color of the gods, green represents nature, red signifies festivals and weddings (representing passion), yellow stands for warmth, and orange symbolizes ambition. It’s a sight to see, as almost everyone will be tossing colors around! If you prefer to avoid getting covered in color, there are designated areas where you can sit and watch the fun without being splashed. Be sure to check out the festival website to learn more about the different zones and the significance of Holi.
Here are a few tips to consider if you plan to attend the Holi Festival this year:
Wear white or mostly white: The colors being thrown are vibrant and stand out beautifully against white clothing.- Wear clothes you don’t mind getting rid of: The colors may stain, so it’s best to wear something you’re okay with parting with.
- Bring a change of clothes: You’ll want something clean to wear when you leave, especially to avoid getting your car messy.
- Bring towels or blankets for your car: You don’t want to stain your seats with the colors you’ll be wearing.
- Bring water or wet wipes: If you’d like to clean off before heading home, water or wet wipes can help. One of my kids insisted on staying “clean,” so we used wet wipes to wipe her down.
- Be prepared to get wet: There are areas where you can splash or get splashed with water. Some people even bring bathing suits for their kids.
- Bring cash: The festival is free, but you’ll need cash to buy food and colors.
- Bring chairs or blankets to sit on: You’ll be at the festival for a while, so make yourself comfortable.
- Consider eye protection: If you’re worried about color getting in your eyes, sunglasses or goggles are a good idea.
- Protect your hair: If you don’t want color in your hair, bring something to cover it, like a bandana or hat.
These are just a few tips; be sure to check the festival website for more information.
