Sign Up For American Sign Language Classes In Lafayette :: Unlock A New Way To Communicate
I’ve always wanted to learn American Sign Language (ASL) and when the opportunity arose I knew that I wanted to sign up! I was so surprised to learn that a local organization, Lafayette Athletic Association of the Deaf (LAAD) offers ASL classes to anyone interested. Needless to say I quickly checked their Facebook page to gather information and register.
LAAD offers ASL classes at the LAAD Clubhouse, which is located in the Scott/Lafayette area. The classes offered are ASL 1 for beginners, and ASL 2 for those who have completed ASL 1 or those who may know some ASL already. The classes are priced very reasonably at $60 for the course. The course lasts about 8 weeks and you’ll meet once a week from 6-8pm. The classes are usually offered during the spring, summer, and fall. You can check the LAAD Facebook page or their website for more details.
Now that you have the details let’s get to the fun part, my experience actually learning ASL. Learning ASL has been one of the most rewarding and fun experiences of my life, yes you read that right FUN. The instructor, Megan, was kind, patient, funny, and made class so fun that you didn’t want to miss a single one. Megan always had a hearing instructor present that would interpret what was being signed to us, this was a big help since many of us had no experience using sign language.
You see, Megan is deaf and she’d communicate with us using ASL the moment we’d arrive at class.

This may seem scary, but it absolutely was not. Part of learning ASL is communicating using ASL, every class you’ll use what you are learning in real time. It was so exciting communicating with fellow ASL students and our instructor every class. Megan has designed each class for everyone taking it to be successful during their ASL journey, for that I’ll forever be grateful.
LAAD hosts many fun events throughout the year that are open to the public to hang out and have fun, you’ll be able to use those ASL skills you’ve been practicing at these events.
The best way to learn ASL is to immerse yourself within the community, the events hosted at LAAD are the perfect opportunities to do so. If you’re interested in learning American Sign Language, keep an eye on LAAD’s FB page so that you’re able to sign up for their next ASL class!
