Homeschooling My Fifth Grader
As we quickly approach the end of fifth grade, I’m incredibly happy with the resources we’ve used. I’ve already written posts about our two co-ops, Classical Conversations and Barefoot University. Some other resources we use at home include CTC math, Apologia Science, Not Consumed Bible Studies, Healthy Living, More Than Words, Life Skills, and my grief curriculum titled “My Daddy Was Too Young To Die: Practical Strategies for Helping a Child Navigate Grief.”
CTC math is brand new to us. We were struggling with math since it’s my weakest subject. Knowing this about myself, I wanted to make sure I gave my daughter a good education in math. We’ll also seek in person tutoring over the summer to ensure she is confident with her math skills.

For history, we read a timeline of the world. Classical Conversations produces beautiful timeline cards, along with a fun song to learn each event in history. We spent the year reading through these cards and learning more about different events in history, including The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the American Revolution, and September 11, 2001.
Produced by Gather Round Homeschool, our life skills curriculum was interesting for both me and my daughter. Covering a wide variety of topics, we learned about first aid, etiquette, cars, kitchen/food safety, and emergency preparedness. For science, we’ve been studying astronomy using a curriculum from the company Apologia. It contains a text book and a notebooking journal, which helps the concepts come to life.

Living Healthy is a curriculum from the company Masterbooks. All of their resources are Christian based and keep God at the center. This curriculum covers exercise, nutrition, personal health, and environmental health. My daughter has been doing a great job working independently on this one. More Than Words is a bible study from this company. My daughter also works independently as she learns more about reading the Bible and learning about Jesus.
Not Consumed is a company that produces Bible studies for the whole family. I have a parent guide and my daughter has an age appropriate guide so we can learn together. So far, we’ve learned about stress, hope, anger, and fear.

My Daddy Was Too Young To Die: Practical Strategies for Helping a Child Navigate Grief is a curriculum I created after the death of my husband. This book is full of hands on activities to help a child manage the difficult emotions that occur with grief.
