Why We Finally Gave Our Kids an Art Cabinet

I have fought really hard in our home to cultivate an environment and culture of creativity, imaginative play, and artistic freedom with my kids. I would say that goal has been successful! Our kids love to create art, pretend play, and try new artistic endeavors to their heart’s content.

The only problem? The MESS that comes with that creative freedom can be extremely overwhelming to both the parents and the kids.

I wanted our art supplies to be accessible to my kids daily, which means the supplies needed to be fairly out in the open in our communal living spaces, instead of shoved in a closet or under a bed. We tried many storage solutions in our kitchen over the years, because I wanted my kids to be able to create art at the kitchen table whenever they wanted. We tried rolling carts, various bins, baskets, and drawers as storage solutions, but everything we tried just ended up looking junky and messy.

Finally, my husband and I decided that for our daughters’ joint birthday present, we would purchase a nice cabinet designated for the sole purpose of holding their art supplies in the kitchen. We measured a certain nook in our kitchen where the art storage usually ended up, then searched the internet for a cabinet that was aesthetically pretty, had some doors to hide mess, and fit the measurements of our nook. We found the perfect cabinet from Target, and our “art cabinet” was born!
