Fall Break Fun :: Top Reasons to Visit Texas Hill Country — Surprisingly Just a 6-Hour Drive Away

Looking for a fun fall break without venturing too far from Lafayette? The Texas Hill Country is a fantastic destination, especially in the fall. Our family explored this charming region this summer and discovered it’s an easy drive with plenty of outdoor activities—some of which really pushed us out of our comfort zones! It’s about a six-hour drive, and there’s no shortage of things to do.
River Rafting Adventures
One of our highlights was rafting on the Guadalupe River. While the rapids might be considered mild by some, they were just enough to remind us that we’re far from experts — my nine-year-old even suggested I might need some lessons! Ha!
For river rafting, we used Rockin’ R Rides to rent rafts on the Guadalupe River. We found that the largest family raft would have been our best choice. Instead, we had two double rafts and a single, making things tricky. My youngest and I struggled and got stuck on the rocks multiple times! If you’re up for a bit more adventure, opt for the second exit for a bigger rapid at the end. My youngest and I chose the first exit while the rest of our group tackled the bigger challenge.
Don’t forget your water shoes — I did and instantly regretted it. Also, bring a waterproof case for your phone and keys; they’re available for purchase when you check-in. There is an age requirement for rafting, so be sure to check that before you go. If you’re thinking about bringing your dog, they’re welcome too!
Dining Delights: Huisache Grill
Huisache Grill is a fantastic restaurant with great vibes that was in downtown New Braunfels. It quickly became a family favorite with its cozy atmosphere and delicious food. As we left the restaurant, we spotted deer in the middle of town—an unexpected treat that thrilled the kids. We stayed in an Airbnb along the Guadalupe River, and everything we wanted to do was within a 20-minute drive, making for a convenient and low-stress vacation.
Even though Schlitterbahn Waterpark might be closed for most of the fall, it’s worth checking their schedule for potential weekend openings. The water was chilly in July, so October might be even colder — use caution if you plan to visit!
Shopping Spree: San Marcos Premium Outlet
Regardless of the waterpark’s status, there are plenty of activities. Be sure to check out the San Marcos Premium Outlet, just about 15 minutes from New Braunfels. With a wide range of stores, it’s a great spot to pick up gifts for the upcoming holidays. Just a heads-up: the food options at the outlet mall aren’t the best, so it’s a good idea to eat before you go.
Exploring Downtown New Braunfels
Parking and walking is how I roll, though my family isn’t always thrilled about it. Despite the heat and everyone getting sweaty, we strolled from the ice cream shop Scoop Street to Got Toys, a fun little shop the kids loved exploring. Just a heads-up: they did have some items with inappropriate sayings, so keep the kids away from the sock aisle. We then visited Local, a nearby boutique with a great mix of trendy and casual Texas-style clothing and accessories, before finally making our way to Muck & Fuss—all on foot. The restaurant was family-friendly, with outdoor seating and games that entertained our kids while we enjoyed our meal.
Nearby Towns
If you want other options for a Hill Country adventure, consider exploring Dripping Springs and Wimberley. Both towns offer beautiful outdoor activities, charming shops, and art galleries—perfect for adding a touch of nature and local flavor to your trip. For wine enthusiasts, Fredericksburg is about two hours away and is home to numerous wineries and delightful shops.
