Maximizing Savings on Baby Essentials for the First-Time Mom

Maximizing Savings on Baby Essentials for the First-Time Mom

Are you a soon-to-be mom and overwhelmed by the number of baby items you’ll need for when your little one arrives? Diapers, toys, clothes, gear…the list feels like it never ends, especially as children growly quickly through different ages and stages. However, there are plenty of ways to ease the burden of spending a fortune on new things you’ll need for your baby.

I’ve put together a list of local and online resources for first-time moms on a budget who may be stressed by the sheer amount of “stuff” they need for their baby. These are all resources I’ve used myself and love to share with other moms.

Source Secondhand Clothing from Family, Friends, and Local Facebook Groups

Clothing hand-me-downs are a number one item, in my opinion, because you get to try many different brands for free! Utilizing second-hand clothes as much as possible in the first year is an excellent way to see what styles and sizes fit your baby the best. Taking a look at a brand’s size chart will help you get an idea on how the clothes will fit your baby.

A great starting point is to ask friends and family with young children if they have any baby clothing they no longer need and would like to give away. More than likely, you will already have family and friends ready to offload piles of clothing their kids have grown out of. This will lead to substantial savings on clothing.

The next place you can score free or discounted baby clothing is from local mom groups on Facebook. A few groups that I highly recommend are Lafayette Mom Neighborhood Group, Lafayette Mom Marketplace, Real Moms of Acadiana and Acadiana Baby Steps. I always see moms offering bundles or individual pieces of clothing for free or cheap in these groups on a weekly basis. This can be super helpful when your fast-growing baby is on their way up to the next size.

Buy Pre-owned, Consigned, or Discounted Items

Maximizing Savings on Baby Essentials for the First-Time MomTwo of my go-to choices in the Lafayette area for pre-owned clothing are Once Upon a Child and Baby & Me Boutique. Once Upon a Child is a resale store for children’s clothing, toys, and gear where you can buy and sell pre-owned baby apparel and other baby items. Baby & Me Boutique is a thrift store operating under the DesOrmeaux Foundation, a non-profit organization that serves expecting mothers in need of shelter, medical assistance with pregnancy, and baby items. It specializes in selling new and gently-used maternity and children’s clothing and other items donated by members of the Lafayette community.

Rhea Lana’s is a consignment sale event held in Lafayette twice per year in the fall and spring featuring high-quality children’s clothes, maternity clothes, toys, and more at discounted prices. You can also sell your pre-loved baby items at the next sales event if you’re looking to pass on some pieces. Another fantastic baby savings event in Lafayette is the Bargain Boutique Overstock sale, held in the spring and fall at the Cajundome Convention Center. This event focuses on clothing sales from newborn to teen, and all apparel is brand new boutique brand clothing sold at 40-70% off.

Baby Discount Websites

For online purchases, some great websites to buy discounted baby items from are fromrebel.com and goodbuygear.com. Rebel is an open box, but never-used return storefront for all things baby featuring up to 70% off all items. Good Buy Gear is another website that offers anywhere from 40-60% off open-box and gently used baby equipment.

Baby Registry Welcome Kits

There are several companies that will send you a welcome kit with a variety of baby bottles, pacifiers, and other baby product samples at a minimal buy-in just for creating a registry with them. My favorites are Target, Amazon, and Babylist

Free Formula Samples and Coupons

Whether you’re combo feeding or exclusively using formula to feed your baby, formula is a frequent, expensive purchase that quickly adds up. Companies like Enfamil and Similac will send you cans or ready-to-feed samples of formula and coupons at no cost just for signing up for their rewards program. This is also an excellent way to try a few different formulas for your baby before determining what their little tummies can tolerate.

These tips can help you save a considerable amount on all the baby items you’ll need and take some of the financial pressure off your family. Remember, you don’t need to buy everything brand new; the important thing is if it works for your baby. A little planning and organizing can go a long way in helping you save money and feel ready to enjoy the excitement of your little one’s arrival.
