A Lafayette Mom’s Reminder to Slow Down and Admire the Beautiful World Around Us

A Lafayette Mom’s Reminder to Slow Down and Admire the Beautiful World Around Us

As moms, life can feel busy all the time. Between school drop-offs, activities, work, laundry, and everything else that fills our days, it’s easy to rush from one thing to the next without ever slowing down.

Lately, I’ve been trying to do something simple: take a few moments to admire the beautiful world around me.

The more I slow down, the more I notice things I used to overlook. Sometimes it’s a bird perched on the fence. Other times it’s sunlight shining through the trees. Recently, it was even a snake near my front door.

In fact, many of the things we pass every day become much more interesting when we take the time to truly notice them.

What I’ve discovered is that nature has a way of reminding us to pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us every day.

The Birds That Keep Showing Up

Have you ever been sitting outside enjoying a quiet moment when a bird suddenly lands nearby?

Maybe it perched on your mailbox. Perhaps it landed on the fence between your yard and your neighbor’s. Sometimes they seem to appear at exactly the moment you finally slow down enough to notice them.

A Lafayette Mom’s Reminder to Slow Down and Admire the Beautiful World Around Us

Over the past few months, I’ve become curious about the birds I see around Lafayette. I’ve started looking up their names, learning about their habits, and reading about the meanings different cultures have associated with them over time.

Whether you believe in symbolism or simply enjoy watching wildlife, there’s something fascinating about observing these visitors in our own backyards.

Northern Cardinal

With their bright red feathers, cardinals are one of the most recognizable birds in Louisiana.

In many traditions, cardinals are associated with hope, encouragement, and vitality. Regardless of symbolism, they’re hard to miss and often brighten an ordinary day.

Blue Jay

Blue jays are known for being intelligent, vocal, and confident.

Many people associate them with courage, curiosity, and determination. Watching one can be a reminder to stay confident and trust yourself.

Mourning Dove

Known for their gentle cooing sounds, mourning doves are often connected with peace, love, and new beginnings.

Their calm presence seems to encourage us to slow down and appreciate life’s quieter moments.

Carolina Wren

Small but energetic, Carolina wrens have surprisingly loud voices.

As a result, they are often associated with optimism and resilience. Their energy serves as a reminder that size doesn’t always determine impact.

Northern Mockingbird

Louisiana’s state bird is famous for mimicking the songs of other birds.

Because of this unique ability, many people view mockingbirds as symbols of creativity and adaptability.

Seeing Nature Through New Eyes

Meanwhile, nature offers lessons far beyond the birds that visit our backyards.

I’ve also found myself paying closer attention to the trees.

The next time you’re outside, pause for a moment and really look.

Watch the wind move through the leaves. Notice how every branch grows differently. Pay attention to the colors, textures, and patterns you might normally walk past without a second thought.

At first glance, one tree may seem similar to another. However, the longer you look, the more differences you begin to see.

The same is true of people.

Every person has a unique story, different experiences, and individual gifts. Nature has a way of reminding us that beauty often exists in those differences.

Why the Beach Feels So Restorative

One of my favorite places to slow down and recharge is the beach.

There’s something about standing near the water that immediately helps me feel more present. The sound of the waves, the warmth of the sand, and the endless view of the horizon create a sense of peace that can be difficult to find in everyday life.

Individual grains of sand seem insignificant on their own. Yet together they create miles of beautiful shoreline.

Likewise, small moments often become the memories we treasure most.

In addition, spending time near the water encourages us to slow down and appreciate the present moment.

Collecting seashells with our children, watching a sunrise, taking an evening walk, or simply sitting quietly while listening to the waves can remind us to appreciate what is happening right now instead of constantly focusing on what comes next.

Perhaps that’s why so many people leave the beach feeling refreshed and renewed.

An Unexpected Lesson From a Snake

However, not every lesson from nature comes in a form we immediately welcome.

Now let’s talk about something I don’t normally admire.

A snake.

Recently, I spotted one near my front door. My first instinct was to run in the opposite direction.

Instead, I stopped.

I watched from inside the house, said a quick prayer, and waited for it to move along.

I’m still counting that as personal growth.

Living in Louisiana certainly comes with plenty of unexpected wildlife encounters.

Interestingly, snakes have been viewed in many cultures as symbols of change and transformation because they shed their skin throughout their lives.

Whether that encounter meant something deeper or not, it reminded me that growth often happens when we face situations that make us uncomfortable.

Slow Down and Notice

Ultimately, these everyday moments can help us feel more connected to the world around us.

Nature has a way of teaching us simple lessons.

Birds remind us to pay attention.

Trees remind us that growth takes time.

The beach reminds us to be present.

Even unexpected encounters can encourage us to see things from a different perspective.

The next time you step outside, take a moment to notice what’s around you.

Look up at the birds.

Study the trees.

Listen to the wind.

Watch the clouds drift across the sky.

You might be surprised by what you see.

More importantly, you might discover that some of life’s most meaningful moments have been there all along, waiting for you to slow down enough to notice them.
