How to Make Candy-Free Valentine’s Treat Bags for Your Child’s Class

It’s that time of year again! Valentine’s Day is approaching, and it will soon be time to pass out Valentine’s Day Cards or treats to your child’s class. I fall somewhere in between “Pinterest-mom” and “Make-this-as-easy-as-possible-mom.” I always appreciate it when my child comes home with thoughtful treats and items from the class’s holiday parties, and I like to offer the same thoughtfulness when we plan out the treat bags from my child! This year, I opted for the treat bags to be candy-free to decrease the candy and chocolate overload that will inevitably be coming home with our kiddos!

Here’s how to make the sweetest candy-free Valentine’s Day treat bags for your child’s class!

Materials Needed:

  • Valentine’s Day-themed cellophane bags and twist ties
  • Valentine’s Day cards of your child’s choice (Target has boxes of 32 cards for $4.00, with a variety of themes such as Gabby’s Dollhouse, Frozen, Minecraft, Spiderman, etc.)
  • A few small toys with Valentine’s Day colors or themes, such as bouncy balls, slime, bubbles, temporary tattoos, play-dough, stickers, pencils, etc.
  • A healthy snack, such as chips, applesauce, popcorn, or fruit snacks (Be mindful that most school facilities are peanut-free)
  • A list of students’ names from your child’s teacher

Assemble the bags

Include your child in the process of assembling the treat bags! I had my daughter help me make the treat bags for her PreK-4 class, and she was so excited! She hand-selected the Valentine’s cards and colors of the toys that she thought each friend would like best, making the bags all the more personalized.

One by one, we personalized all of the Valentine’s Day cards with each friend’s name. This is where the list of students from your child’s teacher will come in handy. You will want to get the spelling right for each child and not miss anyone! Then, we stuffed each cellophane bag with the card, toys, and healthy snack.

The final step was to twist-tie all of the cellophane bags closed. This was the most tedious part and was mostly an adult job. The set I bought also came with tags to add to the bags with each child’s name!

Easy-peasy! This is a special activity to do with your child, and they will feel so proud when they pass out their treat bags to their classmates! No one will even notice they are candy-free!
