When Everything Is Changing, Here Is How I Stay Grounded

Staying grounded while all the world is changing around you can feel extremely challenging.

Here in South Louisiana, we feel it in every way. The seasons are changing. Time is changing. The weather feels so much different here in South LA now. Schedules at work and at school are shifting. Plants are blooming, pollen is coming, temperatures feel hotter at times, and our children are getting older right before our eyes.

Truth is, we are surrounded by change every single day — whether it’s subtle changes or ones that feel noticeable and abrupt. We all must deal with change.

And as a mama, that can feel overwhelming.

So I want to share the ways I ground myself when everything around me feels like it’s moving.

I Walk Outside Barefoot

One way I ground is by actually walking outside without shoes on and allowing my feet to touch the ground. There is something about physically feeling the earth beneath me that reminds me to slow down. To breathe. To be present.

Praise and Worship in My Car

There have been so many moments of praise and worship in my car — hands lifted, eyes closed, and tears in my eyes.

Sometimes it’s the only quiet place I have. Sometimes it’s exactly what my heart needs before I walk into whatever is next.

Praying in the In-Between Moments

I pray for others while I’m stopped at a red light. I pray for the people I see walking past me. I pray for the person standing in line at a fast-food restaurant.

When my mind feels overwhelmed, shifting my focus to someone else grounds me. It reminds me that we are all carrying something.

Reading What I Need for the Season I’m In

I read verses about whatever it is I’m dealing with — anxiety, overwhelm, how to be a helper, how to be a better wife.

Instead of letting my thoughts spiral, I intentionally fill my mind with truth that speaks directly to what I’m facing.

Reaching Out When Someone Crosses My Mind

If someone crosses my mind, I reach out. I don’t take for granted the times I’ve thought of people and then they cross my path.

Connection grounds us. Community grounds us. And sometimes obedience in those small nudges matters more than we realize.

Acknowledging the Good in Others

I take the time to acknowledge the good I see in others.

On hard days — especially the ones a mama may be facing quietly — that one compliment, that one encouraging word, can be the very thing that lifts her up. It might give her the boost of confidence or the strength it takes to keep going… or even the courage to do something just for her.

When Everything Is Changing, Here Is How I Stay Grounded

Smelling the Flowers My Little Girl Picks

I take a moment to actually smell the flowers my little girl picks for me.

Those tiny hands. Those simple gifts. Those reminders that what matters most is often right in front of us.

Doing What Fills My Cup

I spend time doing something that fills my cup — like writing these words for you.

Creating. Reflecting. Sharing. Processing. That grounds me.

Mama, if you’re facing change and starting to feel so anxious that you can’t quite keep up…

If you feel so different that you’ve completely forgotten who you are…

May this remind you of ways to ground yourself so that you, too, can walk in confidence and adjust to change in ways you never imagined you could before.

Yes, things are changing around you.

But when you ground yourself, you are reminded of what’s important.

You are reminded of exactly who you are on the inside.

And that — who you are — is what matters most. 🤍
